Greek Orthodox baptisms are different from other baptisms I’ve had the pleasure of doing. It is a huge rite of passage in the Greek culture. A large party is thrown after the baptism and entire extended families and relatives turn out to celebrate the occasion. Greek churches are very ornate and beautiful, and there a lot more rituals during the ceremony. I always feel in awe when I’m in the sanctuary. The child’s godparents also play a big role in the event and are on hand to provide gifts, a beautiful cross necklace, and brand new set of clothes.
